Week 1 Lecture 1,

You might ask the question why should I plant a church?

The apostle Paul said: "The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded accordingly to his own labor (1Corinthians 3:8). By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each should be careful how he builds" (1Corinthians 3:10).

Tom Cheyney from the church planting group has some great points for reasons to plant a church.

  • 1. Church Planting is the most effective evangelism tool anywhere (Acts 6:7).
  • 2. Many tools exist to assist you in planting a church with the North American Mission Board.
  • 3. Church Planting is the Great Commission at its best. Multiplication is the heart of a church planter. Replenishment is part of God’s amazing vineyard. That which is watered ultimately becomes a source for future planting (Isaiah 55:10).
  • 4. You long to establish new life and to break new ground. You are a cultivator and gardener of spiritual life.
  • 5. New Churches tend to grow much faster than older churches.
  • 6. It is a Holy privilege to exercise your gifts under God in providing a growing new church fashioned on the New Testament.
  • 7. New Churches produce more ministry leaders (Acts 16:5).
  • 8. You realize that lost people matter to God.
  • 9. You can give life to the vision God gave you for your life’s ministry.
  • 10. You long to penetrate a city and found a flagship church.
  • 11. Your family's faith will grow.
  • 12. Church Planting is relational and enables you to make many new friends for Christ.
  • 13. You will have more people praying for you.
  • 14. Church Planting is complete evangelism.
  • 15. You have a desire to see future planters and pastors to be called to ministry from your ministry investment (Proverbs 11:24).
  • 16. Starting a fresh new work means you are free from past problems from an already existing church.
  • 17. You are not afraid of hard work (Proverbs 13:11)!
  • 18. You have strong leadership tendencies and/or organizational skills and are able to easily take charge of situations.
  • 19. You can’t wait for this to end so that you can be obedient to the Lord and enlist right now!
