Final Paper Assignment: Dissecting Rhetoric

Meets course objective: Have been exposed to the use of logic in rhetoric and rhetorical exchange

Assignment:

Using your Questia subscription, please do the following:

1.) Search Questia to determine its resources on a controversial subject you care deeply about (ie, abortion, capital punishment, evolution, animal rights). The subject matter may be as common or obscure as you wish.

2.) Find Questia-held documents that relate to your subject and clearly promote a particular viewpoint or argument.

3.) Research the documents to determine their truth (logical) content.

4.) Find at least one document that is demonstrably logically false (whether for or against your position) and at least one that is demonstrably true.

5.) Construct a final paper (8-12 pages in length) devoted to your subject, using only the logical arguments you find in Questia. Be sure to:

Provide a background explanation of the issue
Provide each side's generally understood viewpoint (ie., "for" or "against," etc.)
Provide the arguments each side uses to support its case
Dissect the argument each side makes using logical concepts and structures
Provide an honest, accurate assessment of the truths and fallacies in each side's position.
