Assignments for this course take the form of written summaries, research, and analysis. They are designed to help us work through the course objectives, while keeping a focus on our spiritural growth through conceptual learning.

For each assignment, please develop a document and submit it to me in either Microsoft Word, RTF (rich text format), or HTML format (your word processing software should permit you to do a "save as" and choose either of those formats).

For each assignment, please be sure to that your responses indicate that you have read and carefully considered the resource material, as assigned.

Assignment 5

Effective Youth Ministry

Listed below are several articles, case studies, and testimonies of "effective" youth pastors and youth ministry efforts. Please cull through them with an eye toward developing your own general model of an "effective" youth pastor.

Develop a short (3-5 page) paper entitled: An Effective Youth Pastor (Now!). Your paper should reflect your personal model of an effective youth pastor (or youth ministry effort).

To create your paper, you will need to develop in your own mind a definition of "effective."

For example, is an "effective" ministry one that sees lots of kids saved, or one that equips kids to minister to the world? Is an “effective” ministry one that works with street kids or a well-organized youth group in an established evangelical church?

As you are reading the paragraph above, it might occur to you to say, "But "effective" youth ministry can mean all of those things!"

And that is, precisely, the challenge of coming to grips with "effective" youth ministry. It is entirely situational. That might provide a hint to the key to this paper: Finding characteristics of youth ministries that are "effective" given their situation.

Please be sure that your paper includes the following:

Your definition of "effective" in the context of youth ministry.

A short narrative about how you arrived at your definition of "effective."

Examples—case studies or reports-of "effective" youth ministries. You can find them in the links below--or elsewhere online, if you prefer.

Testimony-based on the above—to the "effectiveness" of the ministry involved.

Suggested Paper Format:
Part I - My Definition of "effective" in youth ministry

Part II - How I came to understand "effective" as it applies to youth ministry

Part III - Examples of effective (or articles about) youth ministry efforts (and/or youth ministers)

Part IV - What about the examples or articles in Part III indicates "effectiveness"
