Crisis Counseling- Norman Wright
- How Jesus Responded to People:
- Three Chararacteristics of
Jesus approach to dealing with people
1.
Jesus had compassion for others.
a. Jesus
was compassionate and he was concerned about the needs
and affliction of others (Mark 6: 34, Mark *}J
b. Jesus
accepted people as they were (John 4, Luke 19)
c. He valued
people, and gave them a sense of worth.
In Crisis counseling one must
recognize that at the heart of many people’s problem is
low self concept. Helping to establish and discover
their worth to God may help to stabilize the person.
2.
Discernment- is the ability to see the real need
of people regardless of the presenting situation.
a.
Recognize that the person coming to you is in a
crisis and has a need.
b.
Jesus used different approaches to meet different
personality needs.
c.
Words are powerful and he sometimes spoke
directly, sometimes softly, and other times He conveyed
feelings (Mark 3:5).
d.
Jesus emphasized right behavior
e.
Jesus encouraged people to take responsibility
for changing their present condition (John 5:6), Mark
10:51)
f.
Jesus inspired hope ( Mark 10:26-27)
g.
Jesus encouraged people ( Matthew 11:28-30)
h.
Jesus stated that those who keep their mind
stayed on Him; He would keep in perfect peace. The peace
of God is available for believers (John 14:27).
In crisis counseling, the person
or couple or family must make a choice to change before
any progress can be made. A goal in counseling is to get
the person or person’s to accept and take responsibility
for their actions. Developing goals and setting
priorities in life is very important.
3.
Jesus spoke with authority.
a.
Confrontive counseling may be necessary; at times
one must be authoritative, and not hesitant.
b.
Confront as necessary, encourage and admonish
individuals (Matthew 8:26, Matthew 18:15, John 8:3-9
B. Jesus was effective in ministry because:
1.
He was obedient to God
2.
He lived a life of Faith
3.
He was prayerful
4.
He spoke with authority
5.
Jesus became involved in the lives of people
If you are called to counsel, God
will give you the authority to minister, and He will
equip you. Using the authority of Scripture is the
foundation, but the Scripture must be used
appropriately. Examine your own life according to the
Scripture it will help one to counsel others.
- Developing a a Biblical
Counseling Process
1.
The counseling process has five steps
a.
Building a relationship (John 16:7-13)
b.
Exploring the problem, clarifying issues, and
what steps to take to handle the problem
c.
Decide the course of action (John 14:26, 1
Corinthians 2:13).
d.
Agreeing on the action plan, as viewed by client
and counselor (John 16:123, Acts 10:19-29)
e.
Terminating the counseling relationship and
encouraging the counselee to apply the answer, (Romans
8:14).
Counseling is designed to help and
to stimulate the problem solving process. This is the
goal of all counseling to stimulate productive change in
behavior, attitude and actions.
Crisis interventions should relieve
distress, restore functioning, help find resources,
understand crisis/problem and develop new attitudes.
